The Episcopal Eucharist
The Episcopal Eucharist is the central worship service of the Episcopal Church, centered around the celebration of Holy Communion. The service begins with a gathering time that includes music, procession, and opening prayers, followed by the Liturgy of the Word featuring readings from scripture, a sermon, and community prayers. The heart of the service is the Liturgy of the Table, where bread and wine are blessed through the Eucharistic Prayer—an extended prayer that includes the retelling of the Last Supper and invocation of the Holy Spirit. All are welcome to receive communion by coming forward to the altar, where they receive bread and wine as symbols of Christ's body and blood. The service concludes with thanksgiving prayers, a blessing, and the dismissal, sending the congregation out into the world to serve.
This ancient liturgy connects Episcopalians with centuries of Christian tradition while remaining accessible to newcomers, with ushers and bulletins helping guide participants through the service.
